La décharge de Culmore (Royaume-Uni), un « aimant » pour les goélands rares

Ornithologists from Britain and Western Europe come to study the birds of Northern Ireland every year, and with good reason. The province’s position on the western fringes of Europe, and the sheer size of many of the flocks that breed or visit, have made it of particular interest both to the experts and the increasing number of birdwatching visitors who are able to combine their special interest with a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. Four Belgian birders, including Jacques-A. Leclercq, have visited the region from the 24th to the 27th of January 2003 to study rare gulls, and in particular the American Herring Gull (Larus smithsonianus), for which Northern Ireland is a must.
The Culmore Rubbish Dump, located on A2, 6 miles north of Derry city, is a perfect place for searching this subspecies, and other interesting species such as the Glaucous Gull (L. hyperboreus), the Iceland Gull (L. glaucoides) and the Ring-billed Gull (L. delawarensis).
