Introduction
Yoav Perlman travaille à l’Israeli Ornithological Center (Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel). C’est l’un des ornithologues les plus actifs du pays, et il est le spécialiste d’un oiseau énigmatique, nichant très localement dans le Paléarctique occidental : l’Engoulevent de Nubie (Caprimulgus nubicus).
Nous avons pu observer cette espèce non loin du ibboutz Ne’ot Hakikar, à la frontière avec la Jordanie, au cours d’une visite nocturne guidée par Yoav en 2007.
L’oiseau s’y reproduit dans des marais salants à Tamaris et à Suedea « truffés » de mines, ce qui a permis à cet habitat très menacé par l’extension agricole de subsister.
Yoav a passé de nombreuses nuits à étudier cet oiseau méconnu, et il a publié dans le numéro 118 de la revue Sandgrouse un article révélant de nouveaux éléments sur sa biologie et son statut en Israël. Nous vous en proposons une version française.
Abstract
Yoav Perlman works for the Israeli Ornithological Center (Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel). He is certainly the best specialist in Israel of a very poor known species that breeds very locally in the Western Palearctic, the Nubian Nightjar Caprimulgus nubicus. In Israel, its decline is mainly due to habitat destruction. It is currently found only in the Kikar Sdom region south of the Dead Sea. The main ecological requirements for Nubian Nightjar territories are a patch of at least 50 ha of salt marsh, preferably near water sources, and adjacent open areas for foraging.
Yoav published an article in the 118 issue of the Sandgrouse magazine, presenting several new and previously undocumented aspects of the breeding cycle, courtship and food of this species.
