Découverte d’une nouvelle population de Chevêchettes nimbées au Pérou

The Long Whiskered Owlet, one of the rarest birds on Earth, was watched, photographed and filmed January the 24th 2010, in a forest near the Peruvian village La Esperanza, on the eastern slope of the Andes.
The bird was found during a regional survey made by the Charity Neotropical Primate Conservation (N.P.C.) (www.neoprimate.org). It was observed by Shachar Alterman, an Israeli birdwatcher, Noga Shanee, co-founder of the organization, and Edin Fonseca, a local guide. Long-Whiskered Owlet was discovered only in 1976, when it was caught in the mist nest of an ornithological team. Its scientific name Xenoglaux loweryi means « Strange Owl » to hint how little we know about this small and peculiar looking bird, characterized by very long whiskers protruding from its head.
On the same night the owlet was found, the N.P.C group heard no less than five birds which responded to the calls played by the team. No previous record of such dense population exists so far
